History of Swimming

swimmers-79592_960_720
swimmers-79592_960_720

The history of swimming goes way back to that of prehistoric times. Books written from 2000 to 1500 BC including the Bible have references to swimming. It was mostly used in these times as a means of cleansing. Any form of competitive swimming wasn’t formed until the 1800’s in Europe. It was included in the first Olympics in 1896 in Athens, Greece.

It was noted that Ancient Egypt had cave drawings of humans swimming in the nearby sea. They often depicted a form of the breaststroke as the first type of swimming or something they used to call the front crawl. Ancient Egyptian, Grecian and Roman palaces were often equipped with swimming pools or baths. Often reserved for the elite that used them as relaxation pools and cleaning tubs.

It is noted by historians that swimming was also often used in battle. The Greeks were often regarded as solid swimmers and at the Battle of Salamis after a number of both Greek and Persian boats were destroyed it was said that all of the Persians drowned due to their inability to swim while the Greek prevailed.

The history of swimming is much easier to understand than other sports. Without any equipment to speak of an individual can take to the waters. Obviously those countries that had the most access to water were the first to adapt to swimming. History did not have the spreading of the sport as many other sports had encountered because it was basically already available. You either adopted swimming as a means of life or you just chose not to swim.

The evolution of swimming history expanded during the middle ages. A number of individuals took it upon themselves to write books about swimming. They were often focused on the ability to not drown rather than a perfect backstroke as you would imagine. Life saving concepts and techniques began to form throughout the next few hundred years and around the 18th and 19th century the sport began to evolve into more of a competition than just life safety. Swimming Associations and Clubs popped up all over the world. Some of the first in swimming history were in China, Sweden and Germany.

Schools began to believe that swimming was a natural part of any life education. Therefore, they began to teach swimming in schools not just as a life safety course but as an extracurricular activity. Schools and Universities began to adopt these practices and set up clubs and swim teams. Competitions began to arise around the mid 1800’s. England was the first to modernize the sport and incorporate an indoor swimming pool with a swim team. They began to formulate new swimming styles including the sidestroke. Shortly after this, variations of the freestyle began to form and credit can’t really be given to one person as so many were responsible for developing this technique.

The Olympic Games of 1896 in Athens was the first real platform for the sport. There only men competed in a number of events. Throughout the 1900’s the sport evolved and saw a number of stars arise. Johnny Weissmuller, the original Tarzan completed his ten year career by never losing a race and winning five Olympic medals.

Science and technology began to play a part in the sport throughout the 1900’s as well. When scientist and coaches began studying swimmers and there underwater techniques to improve times. The swimsuits began to change as well as any form of resistance was under scrutiny from all competitors. Goggles, swim caps and different variations of training have all evolved as well. The US has seen its share of great Olympians going back to Mark Spitz who won seven gold medals in the 1972 Olympics.

The sport has evolved to a very competitive and fun sport for anyone. That has always been the great appeal that anyone can swim and we have been for the past 3000 years…So goes the history of swimming.

Cross Country Skiing Provides a Fun Workout

cross-country-skiing-624246_960_720
cross-country-skiing-624246_960_720

Have you been using an elliptical machine and ever thought how they developed it? One of the major influences on the designers of the first elliptical machines was the Nordic sport of cross country skiing. The great element that the designers took from cross country skiing is the continuous non-impact movement of the skiers. The first elliptical machines actually were just lower body, but after people wanted a complete full body workout they added the hand bars that act in the same way as a cross country ski pole.

A person that is looking for a good workout in the winter should consider getting off the elliptical machine and getting on a pair of cross country skis. The sport isn’t as difficult to pick up as downhill skiing or snowboarding. It also doesn’t cost as much as the other sports that rely on the hill and gravity to provide you with the momentum to go. With cross country skiing all that is required are a pair of skis and a path to follow that is packed with snow. Really cross country skiing is a fun way of going hiking in the winter time. Sure you could get a pair of snow shoes, but gliding across the snow is much more efficient and rewarding. There are many areas in the winter time that you can only get to with either cross country skis or snow shoes. Yet, people don’t take advantage of these items to see wonderful landscapes and winter sites.

Cross country skiing is also a challenging workout, which like an elliptical machine, isn’t as strenuous as running or riding a bike. During the summer a great way to prepare for cross country skiing is to use an elliptical machine, and to increase the amount of time you spend on building the muscles in your legs. Powerful leg muscles will help to propel you across the snow in the winter. In addition the less you weigh the easier it will be to move across the snow.

Adding protein to your diet is a great way to help your body to create new lean muscle. Lean muscle is great for helping you to lose weight, and for you to get an edge when you are participating in sports like cross country skiing. It takes a lot of calories for your body to create and to maintain lean muscle; which means that when you have lean muscle even when you are idle you are still burning fat. Protein is the building block that your body uses to create lean muscle.

A person that is actively training should get at least half their body weight in grams of protein per day in their diet. That is difficult to do with conventional forms of protein, like meat and eggs. The best way to add protein is to use a whey protein supplement. Whey protein is easy on your body’s system, and won’t cause any major negative side effects, like indigestion. Whey protein is also easier for your body to metabolize and to use more efficiently. Meaning that you are able to get better results compared with using soy based proteins. When purchasing whey protein it is important to look for whey protein isolates. Whey protein isolates contain 90% pure protein and don’t have the fats and carbohydrates that other supplements contain.

If you are sick of looking at the same thing every time that you get onto the elliptical machine, then it is time for you to find a pair of cross country skis and to see what winter has to offer. It is a great workout, and you will find a hobby that will last the rest of your life.

Family Skiing Holidays in France

ski-588696_960_720
ski-588696_960_720

Skiing holidays to France are very popular especially to resorts in the French Alps with popular places like Courchevel and Meribel, but France has absolutely hundreds of kilometres of ski slopes, which are situated in some of the most spectacular mountainous regions in the world.

So when you go on your family skiing holidays or snowboarding, you need to find the right place with the right ski slopes or the nursery slopes for the beginners, so you can be sure of getting the ideal holiday, and whether this is through a travel agency for a luxury package ski holiday, or you are organising everything yourself by choosing your own chalet or staying in a hotel and being pampered whilst off the ski slopes, the choice is endless but you will not be disappointed.

Also, France has some of the biggest ski resorts such as Les Trois Vallees, which is made up of three valleys and includes resorts like Courchevel and Meribel, with this area having around 600km of pistes for skiers of all abilities and experience so there is enough choice for everyone.

Meribel can offer skiing to people with all abilities, as there are some fantastic beginners slopes but The Three Valleys area offers a good challenge for more experienced skiers, and has an incredible choice of ski schools, which cater from groups to inpidual tuition.

And although it is generally a purpose built resort, you will find it like a fairytale atmosphere with the ski chalets that blend into the scenery, however, it does have quite a lively nightlife and can get very busy in the peak season as it is such a popular destination.

Courchevel is an outstanding place to ski or snowboard, but can be a little on the expensive side, although the extensive slopes of the resort will offer extensive and varied skiing. It is made up of four villages known by their altitudes and they vary immensely from their access through to facilities, but some places you can get to ski right out of the door of the hotel!

Font Romeu is one of the oldest ski resorts in Europe and also has the biggest snow making operation in the Pyrenees and with well over 2500 hours of sunshine each year, this makes it another very popular resort for weekend breaks and longer holidays alike.

Chamonix is a town in a valley and there are five very good resorts, but these are not near to the slopes and you would need transport to get to them, but this place has everything from great shops to a wonderful atmosphere, yet because of how well known it is, the whole area can seen very crowded compared to some other skiing towns, especially around the ski lifts.

Alpe d’Huez is one of Europe’s largest and highest ski resorts and is currently one of only around twenty in the world that offers a lift-served vertical of over 2000 metres, plus it has the largest slope in the world where you can ski for well over an hour without taking any ski lift, although these are definitely not for the beginner or intermediate skier.

Yet even though many think of skiing as a winter sport, there are a few places in France where you can still get to ski on the glaciers in the summer months, such as Tignes or Val d’Isere. And there are very few great skiing areas in the world that can excite the imagination more than the Val d’Isère and L’Espace Killy is considered to be one of the best ski areas in the world, plus an amazing variety of different skiing can be achieved through ski lifts and ski buses that link the area of Val d’Isère to the neighbouring Tignes,

But if you have never been skiing then it is advisable to book you holiday through a tour operator, as they will know exactly what resorts are going to be suitable, and it is also an idea to have some lessons on dry slopes prior to going, so that you can make the best of your holiday, rather that spending the first few days just learning to stop falling over on the snow!

Of course, booking your skiing holiday independently can save you quite a lot of money, but there can be downsides as well, especially if you have never been to the resort before, for instance, you may not realise how far it is to get from your accommodation to the slopes, or even how far it would be to get to the ski hire places.

And lets face it, you do not want to be spending a whole day just getting set up rather than on the slopes doing what you went there to do, please do bear in mind that even if you do not have your own skis or skiing boots, you will still need to purchase other items of equipment before you go such as proper skiing gloves and sallopettes to keep you warm and the snow out.

There is a wide range of ski accommodation in France and you can choose from purpose built private ski chalets, chalet apartments or hotels. French skiing accommodation meets the needs of all skiers, with self-catering cabins to fully serviced luxury apartments and hotels, ideal for the skier on every budget.

But the choice of accommodation can be quite mind-boggling and you have to consider all the people in your party, especially if you have young children where childcare facilities or entertainment may be an important issue, or if you are a more experienced skier, you may wish to look at chalets nearer to the more difficult runs rather than the nursery slopes or perhaps opt for a little more luxury in a hotel with gourmet meals by evening in peace and tranquillity.

Speaking to people that have already been to a resort, or even going on to forums can help a great deal, especially if you wish to know what places are the best for good value restaurants when you are on a self-catering holiday, or maybe even avoiding a resort with a lively night life if you have little ones that need their sleep!

Of course, you will also need to look into what other activities that are available in your chosen resort, as there are always things for all of the family to enjoy, such as shows, archery, concerts, squash, tennis, ice skating, golf, swimming, dancing, saunas and spas, plus much, much more.

Skating Mistakes that you want to Avoid

sport-1284275_960_720
sport-1284275_960_720

I’m writing this article to figure out some of the common mistakes that should be avoided when you learning skateboarding. That way you don’t get yourself into a mess and then learn from it the hard way. First, this is a sport that takes plenty of time to learn. Don’t assume you can buy your first board this week and then compete next week because it won’t be happening.

Many mistakes take place with the start to buying a skateboard. It can be tempting to select one based solely on the way that it looks. Other people buy one due to the low price or they assume a high dollar one will make it easier for them to learn. Then they end up putting it way for good after spending hundreds of dollars on it. Don’t let that happen to you. Instead get the right type of board for the type of skating you wish to take part in. Get one that is moderately priced to start with. You can always upgrade later on as a way to reward yourself for learning how to ride.

Many people think that they look ridiculous or at least like a beginner when they were safety equipment. The failure to do so can result in serious injuries including head trauma and broken bones. There is plenty of risk involved with skateboarding but you can minimize it if you take the time to buy safety equipment that fits you properly.

Never attempt to do the moves that you haven’t got the skills for. This is going to increase your risk of injury as well. When someone else does them you may get the impression that they are easy but that isn’t the case. Be confident in your own skill level before you advance to anything else. Learn the right moves for it too before you attempt it or you will end up regretting it.

Trying to stand on your skateboard all the time during the learning process is another common mistake. It should be expected that you will fall, so take the time to learn the best way to do it. With your safety equipment on, crouching down and rolling when you are losing balance will help you get through the fall without feeling any real pain. Then you can get up, find your board and do it all over again!

Don’t consider that everyone is against the issue of skateboarding. If you walk around with such a chip on your shoulder you are going to represent the sport in a negative light. Be respectful of those that don’t appreciate the sport. Don’t force it on them and don’t ride your board though a group of non skaters as they are walking or standing around.

In fact, your behavior can shed new light on the sport for people. They may lose the common stereotype of it due to the respect you have shown to them. By the same token, don’t only associate with other skaters. It can be fun to have a group that shares this common interest but have outside influences as well.

Now that you are aware of common skating mistakes that you want to avoid, you can go about things the right way. That is going to make the learning process easier for you and the entire sport more fun. Too many people give up on it right away because they become frustrated. When you know in advance what to expect you can be well prepared for it. Then they learning process is something you can embrace instead of being intimidated by.

Skateboarding is a Great way to get your Kids off the Couch and Outdoors

skateboard-1143701_960_720
skateboard-1143701_960_720

Today’s technology is fun and all around us. Yet there are some drawbacks to it as well. Many parents fondly remember the days when they spent the summer outdoors playing with their friends. Even after school they would find great activities to take part in until dinner time. Too many children today though end up sitting in the house playing video games, watching TV, or looking at stuff on the internet.

Get outside for exercise each day is very important to children. Statistics show that overweight children are at an all time high. There are many great outdoor activities that can get your kids off the couch and outdoors. Skateboarding is one of them that they will find to be challenging as well as exciting. Instead of you telling them to get outside and find something to do, you will likely need to go out there and get them when you need for them to come back in.

You need spend a lot of time to learn skateboarding the right way. It doesn’t end there though as the basics are just the beginning. Then your child can work on getting faster, learning tricks, and more. They can also use their skateboard as a way to get to school, the park, or the library. They will find it more convenient than riding a bike and it will save you from being their taxi.

One important thing, you need to take the time to review skateboarding equipment. Many parents don’t realize that the type of skateboarding deck and wheels have a significant impact on what a child can do with it. Find out what they plan to take part in so you can offer them the right product. You also want to make sure they have a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads that fit properly. They should always have these items on any time they are using their skateboard.

It is a good idea to help you children to find great tips online or buy them DVD’s that they can watch indoors. This way they can take the information they watch and apply it as they learn to ride their skateboard. The more that they learn, they more confident they will become in their abilities. Then they will start to become creative and come up with new ideas that they can implement on their own as well.

This is a great way to get your child active on a regular basis. The thrill of riding a skateboard is one that they will want to take part in several times a week. Many children ride theirs daily as long as the weather permits them to do so.

Encourage your child to take part in skateboarding if they have expressed any type of interest in it. You want them to be in the habit of getting off the couch and outdoors from a very early age. The longer you allow them to be inside with various forms of technology the harder it will be for them to break such habits. You want to raise happy and healthy children.

Many of them aren’t fond of exercise that is hard work or that is boring. Yet they will have the opportunity to get plenty of exercise when they ride a skateboard. They will be having so much fun with it that they aren’t even going to think of it as exercise or work. Instead they will view it as an activity that gives them the freedom to express themselves in a way that reflects their interests and who they are.

Skateboarding is an Excellent way to Exercise while having Fun

skater-821502_960_720
skater-821502_960_720

It’s very important to spend at least 30 minutes each day of exercise for our overall health. Sadly, too many children and adults simply don’t get it done. There is a common problem in our society – we view exercising as something we are forced to do rather than something we want to do. The way to change that mindset is to find forms of exercise that you enjoy taking part in. Then you will want to do them instead of trying to make up excuses not to fit it into your daily routine.

Skateboarding is a great way to exercise while having fun. In fact, you will likely want to do it for more than 30 minutes a day. It is going to become something you eagerly want to do as soon as you can. It won’t be a form of exercise that you put off and then get upset at yourself when you go to bed because you didn’t do it at all. Staying fit and healthy means you get your body moving. Yet you can do so with a sport like skateboarding where it is fun and not work for you.

When you skateboard, your leg muscles are going to get a workout. Moreover, many of the muscles in your back, chest, and arms will also be used. It really depends on the types of movements you take part in on your skateboard. You will definitely be burning energy which means you will be burning calories and fat as you skateboard. Since we live in a world where obesity is an epidemic for all age groups, this is something you definitely want to be able to benefit from.

Now you may be saying that you can only skateboard during certain times of the year due to the weather. This may be true, but you can also find indoor skateboarding areas. Find out what it would take for your local recreational department to consider one if you don’t have a locally indoor skateboarding area. If that isn’t an option then skateboard when you can and also have other types of exercises in mind you can do when the weather doesn’t make this one possible.

Your body will benefit from the fresh air when you are skateboarding outdoors. This is a great way to cleanse your body and to remove toxins that build up. Fresh air is very powerful when it comes to helping our immune systems. This is just one more way that the sport of skateboarding can be very good for your overall health.

Not only will your body look and feel better when you skateboard, but your skills with this sport will continue to improve as well. You may get to the point where you can take part in competitions or you can teach other people how to do it as well. These types of activities can help improve your mental well being as well. Too many people don’t realize just how important that is. Yet when your physical health and mental health are out of sync you won’t be performing at your best in anything you do on a given day.

If you have thought for a long time that exercising is boring, time consuming, or something you put off then it is time to change all of that. If you enjoy skateboarding then you now have the motivation to get out there and enjoy it each day. In fact, if you feel guilty about spending your time skateboarding then you need to categorize it in your day as exercising. There is no written rule about the types of exercise you need to take part in as long as you get it done. Skateboarding can definitely help you to get into better shape and change what you think of when the word exercise is mentioned.

How To Protect Your Singing Voice

microphone-1209816_960_720
microphone-1209816_960_720

Most people think that singers with good voices are born with them. Yes, although some people have better singing voices than others, most, if not all good singers undergo vocal training to improve their voices.

Most of the singer’s training is done through specific vocal exercises to achieve certain effects such as singing powerfully, getting vibrato into the singing voice or even expanding your vocal range so that singing higher notes is a breeze.

Unfortunately, this article cannot do that as the exercises must be physically demonstrated and manually practised. So instead of learning how to get a good voice, this article will show you how to protect and preserve your singing voice because your voice quality can be destroyed by bad habits that you may not even know you have.

Your voice is produced by a delicate mechanism and when used correctly, it rarely gives you any problem. So take good care of your precious voice and will serve you well for your lifetime.

The first golden rule to having a good voice quality is not to take up smoking and if you are already a smoker, do quit smoking before this nasty habit destroys your singing voice further.

The thousands of irritants and chemicals in cigarettes damage your voice and will certainly shorten your singing career and even your life unless you are a rock singer and need to have a raspy and coarse voice.

Always stay hydrated and as such, you need to stay away from caffeine, alcohol and other substance that dehydrates you. The vocal folds must be hydrated at all times to stay healthy and lubricated. So drink plenty of drink as much water everyday to keep them hydrated.

If you are on medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist whether the medicine you are taking is dehydrating. As a general guide, your body should be well hydrated when your urine is clear and not cloudy.

Everyone’s voice has its own limitations. So get to know yours. Shouting, talking loudly or even singing forcefully is damaging to your vocal cords, this is sheer common sense, but many singers still abuse their voices this way. So don’t shout.

Unfortunately, some people think that to sing powerfully, they have to shout. No, they don’t have to. You can develop a powerful voice with the correct vocal exercises without having to shout.

Your vocal cords collide with each other more than a million times everyday when you produce a sound and so, any extra harsh activities like shouting puts further strain on the already overused vocal cords.

When recovering from a coarse voice like say, from a sore throat, avoid any unnecessary conversations or phone calls to let your voice fully recover. Otherwise your recovery will be slower and even then, small permanent damages may occur.

You need to know that your vocal cords are muscles and therefore like any muscles, they need a thorough warm up before it can perform at its peak when you are singing. By the same token, they need to be cooled down with vocal exercises after your performances.

Just because you get away without warming up or cooling down now does not guarantee that you will not damage your voice in the future.

Next on the list is to avoid late night eating because this may end up with your stomach acid spilling into your larynx when you lie down to sleep and causing a hoarse voice and over the long term, permanent voice damage.

These are just some of the many things that you should not do to preserve, protect and maintain your voice producing mechanism so that you can have a good singing voice permanently. http://www.articlesbase.com/music-articles/how-to-protect-your-singing-voice-584629.html
